Never before seen “Alien” squid captured on film

I thought I’d share this interesting footage I ran across my friend Micah’s blog Gralien Report

More from Micah:

From Houston, if one heads 200 miles or so eastbound into the Gulf of Mexico, eventually you’ll find yourself over one of the world’s deepest oil and gas developments. For weeks now among employees of the Shell oil company’s Perdido site, a rather odd video has been in circulation, filmed by one of their remote submersible’s cameras; a green, alien-like squid with arms more than four times the length of its body, each fitted with a joint similar to an elbow.

As reported at the National Geographic website, “In a brief video from the dive recently obtained by National Geographic News, one of the rarely seen squid loiters above the seafloor in the Gulf of Mexico on November 11, 2007. The clip—from a Shell oil company ROV (remotely operated vehicle)—arrived after a long, circuitous trip through oil-industry in-boxes and other email accounts.”

The squid, Magnapinna talismani, is a species of bigfin squid known only from one or two damaged specimens. Known for the large fins running the length of its body, the squid also hosts unusual white nodules on the ventral surface of its fins. The squid swims with its huge undulating fins, which paired with its remarkably long arms and tentacles, makes seeing the creature one of the deep ocean’s most enigmatic and rare occurrences. To date, no adult specimen, dead or alive, has been captured.
