SyFy & Billy Ray Cyrus: “UFO: Unbelievably Freakin’ Obvious”

“Getting the opportunity to take this adventure with my son, who has always had a keen interest in this area, is a dream come true,” said the country music star. “I hope this series can shine a light on some of the activities we have questioned, and the mysteries that have long inspired us.” -Billy Ray Cyrus

Wow, just when I thought that paranormal/reality television couldn’t sink any lower since introducing Ghost Hunters and Paranormal State, here comes this little gem. Country singer Billy Ray Cyrus and son (apparently he sings as well) are dumping boatloads of money into the bank accounts of SyFy Channel execs, because I don’t know who in their right mind would think that having a washed up country singer host a paranormal show is a good idea. Billy Ray Cyrus and son are supposedly interested in the paranormal so much, that they decided to invest their money and time into finding out the “questions and mysteries that have long inspired” them.

No, don’t get me wrong. I’m not hating on the man or his son. Interest in the paranormal is a healthy one. It’s in human nature to question and prod what we don’t understand. What pisses me off is that just because you have a little dough, you think you are entitled to make a show about a subject that you have no clue about and will probably end up investigating silly claims to simply debunk them and appear to be some form of authority in the field.

You would think that networks would have learned from such shows like ‘MonsterQuest’ and ‘UFO hunters’ that you can only go so far with the concept. But I think I know what the plan for the show is. Besides having to drive cross-country with his son “investigating” UFO reports, I’m sure they will throw in their family drama in the mix. You know, to make things more interesting for the audience. Don’t be surprised if during the show, you see plugs for his son’s band or a Miley Cyrus’ guest appearance.

Sitting here thinking of this concept just pisses me off. I think I’m just so disillusioned with paranormal television and the American viewers in general. Everything nowadays seems to be filtered-down mindless entertainment. Look at the top news sites for the U.S. Do you know how difficult it is to get actual news when going to CNN or HuffingtonPost? Most of the stuff up there is about celebrities going to rehab or the Jersey Shore kids. The Huffingtonpost used to be a great website for news. Now it’s all about “Top 10 FAIL…” or “Lindsay Lohan busted” and shit like that. It seems that as long as you have money in today’s age, you can broadcast your ignorant and meaningless life for everyone to see.

Don’t mind me folks, I’m just another guy who sees through the foggy window that is the so-called “American dream”.

Enjoy
