Real Life Weekend at Bernie’s

Real Life Weekend at Bernie’s

Who can forget that Oscar winning film Weekend at Bernie’s? OK, it didn’t win an Oscar, in fact it wasn’t all that successful and many thought it was downright awful.

I mean, come on! Who’s going to believe that two crazy go nuts buddies can actually get away with dragging a dead friend around to bars, parties and restaurants without anyone being the wiser? That’s ridiculous, right? Huh?

Well hang onto your Tutu Desmond, because it’s happened and not just in the movies but for realz!

Taking a cue from the cult classic, Robert Jeffrey Young, 43, and Mark Rubinson, 25 both residing in the Denver area had plans to show a friend, Jeffrey Jarrett, 43 from Toronto around the city. There was one minor setback when the two good buddies arrived to pick up Jarrett. It seems he was dead.

Now, this problem could have ruined a perfectly good party but Young and Rubinson decided their friend seemed so down in the dumps that he deserved to celebrate the night anyway. So, they loaded him in the car and set out on an evening of adventure, with Jarrett’s credit card of course. What? He didn’t mind!

After stops at a Mexican restaurant and a strip bar they decided too much excitement could be a detriment to Jarrett’s health, so they took him home before continuing their night of debauchery.

As the good time boys were driving to yet another location in the wee hours of the next morning they happen to see a Police cruiser and decided to flag him down. They then proceeded to inform the officer that they suspected their friend, Jeff Jarrett was dead.

After the not so bright dynamic duo reported their problem they were promptly charged with among other things, abuse of a corpse.

As if it couldn’t get any worse, the very first night the two were in prison it was movie night in the auditorium. The movie playing? Weekend at Bernie’s 2. OK, I made that last part up but wouldn’t it have been hill-air-eus? No? What? Hey! Watch your mouth back there! I know your mother!

Two men are charged after they drove their dead friend around Denver on a night of partying that included Mexican food and a strip bar.

Jeffrey Jarrett, 43, was unresponsive when his two pals went to pick him up Aug. 27 so they put him in a car and went out for a night of booze and food using the dead man’s bank card, according to Denver Post.com.

The Post likened the event to a “less amusing real-life version of the film Weekend at Bernie’s” that resulted in two men being charged.

The accused drove Jarrett, who was born in Toronto, around town and left him in the back seat of the car while they went to a restaurant and a bar, after which they took him home and continued on with their night of fun, courtesy of Jarrett’s bank card.

At 4 a.m. the two men flagged down a Glendale police officer and said they suspected their buddy was at home dead, the Post reported.

No cause of death has been determined for Jarrett, a father of a six-year-old son and a real estate agent.

Denver authorities have charged Robert Jeffrey Young, 43, and Mark Rubinson, 25, with abusing a corpse, identity theft and criminal impersonation. They are free on bail.
