Are You A Neanderthal?

I know what my wife would say about me.

There have been lots of theories, and lots of rumors, even a few public figures have been said to be related…

Russian boxer Nikolay Valuev being a notable choice, though Neanderthals were shorter and stockier than Cro-Magnons, and Valuev is 6′ 11″ so why anyone would think that I cannot fully comprehend. Finally the question of interbreeding is conclusively and scientifically answered.

Although tiny, this Neanderthal toe bone from a female who lived 50,000 years ago has yielded the most complete sequence of the Neanderthal genome. The analysis, published this week in Nature, reveals two interesting facts: First, Neanderthal family members often bred and had children — the female whose toe was tested likely had half-sibling parents who shared the same mother. And second: Neanderthals and other human ancestral groups interbred…a lot.

“There was a lot of interbreeding that we know about and probably other interbreeding we haven’t yet discovered,” co-author and University of California at Berkeley professor of integrative biology Montgomery Slatkin said.

There have even been proponents of Bigfoot being a neanderthal hybrid, though again I can never understand why people think a short stocky human becomes a giant hairy one. Hybridization makes strange bedfellows, in more way than one. If this announcement will re-fan the flames of the Ketchum debate, who can say?
