Yet another example of why conspiracy theorists and ancient aliens believers represent the antithesis of science and rationality, or logical thinking. The destruction of evidence can never lead to truth, only detracts from it.

Two German men who visited the Egyptian pyramids in April 2013 now face criminal charges for their attempt to prove their “alternative history” conspiracy theories through vandalism. The men, Dominique Goerlitz and Stefan Erdmann, were joined by a third German, a filmmaker who accompanied them to document their “discoveries.”

Supporters of the popular story that the Pyramids are evidence of a lost civilisation from the dawn of time consider the reaction all part of an ancient conspiracy.
Internet forums, books and doccumentaries all rage against the “old guard” for hiding the “truth” and refusing to take their ideas seriously. Now, they have a pair of Indiana-Jones style heroes: Two German students who stole into the Great Pyramid to scrape away at an ancient cartouche.
The two students from Dresden University recently took matters into their own hands: With Egypt’s political turmoil distracting security forces, the pair conspired to sample the red paint and smuggle the pigment out of Egypt.
They have since asserted the fragments support arguments that the construction of date of the Pyramids was much older than Khufu’s reign.
Ironic and poignant that the cartouche these two frauds damaged sits next to other vandalism of a more prosaic variety. Nevertheless, what Goerlitz and Erdman have done makes them criminals, not activists or heroes, or now possibly martyrs of alternative thinking as I feel sure some supporters of these ideas will make them out to be.
