Haunted St. James Hotel in Cimarron, New Mexico

One haunting I came across that I found intriguing was the paranormal activity found at the St. James hotel in Cimarron, New Mexico. Henri Lambert ( personal chef to President Abraham Lincoln ) originally established the Saloon in 1872. In 1880 the establishment was evolved into a hotel and included the saloon, restaurant, and 43 guest rooms. The hotel has a long dangerous history. 26 murders did take place at this hotel. To this day reports of paranormal activity have been recorded. People say that many well known Wild West Icons had visted this hotel, including Jesse James, BlackJack Ketchum, Buffalo Bill Cody, Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp.

Haunting activity at the St. James Hotel:

Room 18 is where a former owner claims she was pushed down, and it is considered one of the most haunted rooms. Locals believe that the room is haunted by Thomas James Wright, a man who was murdered at his hotel room door after winning rights to the hotel in a poker game. It was said that Wright was shot from behind then continued to into his room where he slowly bled to death. This room with very little furnishing only holds a bed frame without a mattress, a coat rack, a rocking chair and bureau which has been made a shrine to the Old West. The staff keeps the room locked and unused and people are very rarely allowed to enter this room.

Henri’s second wife, Mary Elizabeth, wore rose-scented perfume. Guests report occasionally picking up her scent in her old room, and hearing tapping on an open window until it is closed.  Room 17 belonged to Mary and has been the said to where her presence is detected. Guest are allowed to stay in her room as far as we know.

Objects are constantly reported flying off walls and electrical devices behave erratically.

Guests and staff report a variety of other entities and spirits materializing or making noise around the hotel.

The hotels 2nd floor is said to be the most active. Reports are made of cold spots and the smell of cigar smoke around the hallways, although smoking is not allowed within the hotel. A former manager of the hotel said that “you never see them, but you do feel and hear them.” Another report from a former owner, states that she walked into the dining room and saw a pleasant-looking cowboy standing behind her in the mirror on the front of the bar. The spiritual activity of the hotel has been featured on the popular television shows Unsolved Mysteries and A Current Affair.
