Portuguese Pyramid

Portuguese Pyramid

Back in September of 2013, apparently an undersea pyramid was reported discovered in the Atlantic,  among the Azores. Suspiciously if you look at the posting dates on the articles at Azores-Pyramid.org they all fall within just a few days of each other, and most on the same day.

Portuguese news sites are reporting on the apparent discovery of a man-made subaquatic pyramid between the islands of São Miguel and Terceira in the Azore in Portugal. The underwater pyramidal structure was found by a private yacht owner, Diocleiano Silva, who spotted the strange shaped object on sonar at a depth of 40 metres while sailing in the area.

The structure is said to be perfectly squared and oriented by the cardinal points. It is thought to be approximately 60 metres tall with a base of around 8,000 square metres. The Portuguese Hydrographic Institute of the Navy is currently analysing the data to determine whether it is in fact man-made or not.

Silva found the pyramid around five months ago while fishing on his yacht in the area. He discovered the structure through bathymetric navigation and its tip is submerged around 40ft.

He says his find may be a remnant of the legendary lost world of Atlantis, which sank into the ocean after a failed attempt to invade Athens.

Athens managed to fight off the Atlanteans?

“Researchers have discovered an underwater pyramid 60 meters high and 8000 meters square base near the Bank De João de Castro, between the islands of Terceira and São Miguel. The structure was identified by the sailor Diocleciano Smith based on bathymetry readings. The author does not believe that the pyramid is of natural origin. The Government says that the matter is already being investigated with the support of the Portuguese Navy.”

Before it’s news

As can be clearly seen in this sonar image, we are given to believe is of the structure found, the display is clearly showing only squared off vectors only roughly approximating the shape and not highly detailed enough to make any determination of its actual shape or origins.

During the last Ice Age, sea levels are estimated to have been around 400 feet lower than they are today, so certainly some portion of this area could have been on dry land, not accounting for volcanic upheaval since that time that may very well have raised this area since. But as certainly, looking at these depths, the location of the “pyramid” was certainly surrounded by deep water, if exposed at all. I am among the first to say we should not discount the ingenuity of, or capabilities of our ancient ancestors in construction of known and studied pyramids, henges and other megalithic structures, but this might be stretching that credit just a little.

Diocleciano Silva of course has a website dedicated to his discovery. That website has not been updated since October of 2013 (as of the publishing of this article) but under sea research is slow and expensive so that alone does not necessarily mean anything.

The Azores, officially the Autonomous Region of the Azores (Região Autónoma dos Açores) is one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal, composed of nine volcanic islands situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, and is located about 1,360 km (850 mi) west of Portugal, about 1,510 km (940 mi) northwest of Morocco, and about 1,925 km (1,196 mi) southeast of Newfoundland. Its main industries are agriculture, dairy farming (for cheese and butter products primarily), livestock ranching, fishing, and tourism, which is becoming the major service activity in the region. In addition to this, the government of the Azores employs a large percentage of the population directly or indirectly in many aspects of the service and tertiary sectors.

Being a group of volcanic islands, it is a certainty that there are many underwater sea-mounts. And with a growing tourism industry, no possible alternative motives for the “discovery” of an Atlantis like structure in the area, eh?

Only legitimate research and an actual visit to the site will tell us anything more, and hopefully something more will come, but so far this is little more than the Baltic UFO that turned out to be an outcropping or rock, perfectly natural, if no less interesting for that fact.
