I grew up in rural NWPA, surrounded in forest. I took an early interest in cryprozoology and sharks and have read many books on various crypto subjects such as Bigfoot and Megalodon over the years. I am not a professional writer or a journalist, but I do the best I can. I have a quirky, obscurely dry and sometimes sarcastic sense of humor than can get me in trouble. Some love me and some hate me, but I am who I am.

It was a little over a year ago when news broke of a Northern California “Bear Hunter” who admitted to allegedly shooting two Bigfoot along an access road near Gold Lake.

This news originally reported by the shooter on a Forum board took the Bigfoot community by storm. It wasn’t long before the shooters name came out and one Justin Smeja soon became a celebrity of sorts.

Now Justin is speaking out in a documentary called: I killed Bigfoot – A conversation with Justin Smeja. In this interview you will hear the now famed “Sierra Kills” story right from the shooters mouth.

Whether you believe him or not, this is still worth looking at. So, here is the interview in it’s entirety:

When I first began discussing this with Shawn from Bigfoot Evidence, it seemed a bit far fetched. Shawn had been talking with Justin and as we spoke I eventually started to see the possibility. Unfortunately It wasn’t long before I began to find holes in this story. I don’t know for sure either way, but there are enough red flags to entertain a serious amount of doubt.

Of course those who have been following this story know that Justin has taken a lot of flack from the “No Kill” camp.

This is one of those things that may never be resolved.

Thanks to Shawn for keeping me in touch.

I just can’t bring myself to believe anything this guy says. I think he’s just in it for the fame and trying to squeeze a little cash out of it.

  • Henry

Say whatever you want about this being Bigfoot evidence, only time will tell on that.
The fact that he admits in this video that he could not positively identify the animal before pulling the trigger, the fact that he is told by his spotter “Don’t shoot, its a man in a suit!” and this guy says he finds no reason not to shoot anyway make him despicable. He is the lowest sort of opportunistic hunter, who barely deserves to be called even that. He is hunting from the road which is illegal most places, and thinks it is funny that he may have been shooting at a human. That he is engaged by the Bigfoot community, become part of a “research” team only further serves to discredit that team, and do nothing but harm to the search.

  • The Oshmar

Heck yea, I love it when he said “well f*** him”, brilliant, who DOESN’T like first-degree murder?

  • Joe Burkhart

In their next video they travel to the original site with Moneymaker at night unarmed in giving BIGFOOT the opportunity to express any grievance. Now that might be worth watching!

  • Rmon

Sorry, I am not going to watch it. ONE hour? Are you mad?

  • Scott_McMan

Are you referring to the book he has coming out?

  • Scott_McMan

What if I told you there were hot chicks in there? Watch 10 minutes at a time. Actually, you don’t even have to watch, you can just play the audio in the background as you do your thing.

  • Valkyrie13

I know, an hour, I was like ugh! but then I watched it and it was interesting. But this video was not OCD-friendly and I was distracted by the open cupboard in the back (why didn’t they shut the cupboard!) and the beer bottle cap on the table (who doesn’t throw those away immediately?) and the fact that the microphone wire was not straight and not in line with the grains of the wooden table (someone shouldda fixed that!).  OCDs aside, here’s a rundown of (perhaps idiosyncratic) stuff I noted:

He starts off talking about some tiff he had with bicyclists.  I have no idea what that had to do with anything, but I was immediately both annoyed (as a somewhat avid bicyclist) but also empathized with him (because yeah, bicyclists are like that).  That set the tone for me thru the whole video: I’m annoyed by him, but I empathize with him.  But mostly annoyed.

At 15:55 he swears on his daughter’s life that he’s telling the truth.  What a disgusting thing to say.  Who swears on their daughter’s life?  Someone with no regard for life, that’s who.  I hope his daughter never sees this video.

26 min, after describing killing the adult bigfoot and how the bigfoot children were trying to find the adult, he compares the sounds the bigfoot children made when talking with how a deaf person talks.  Then he compares how deaf people talk to the sounds cows make.  That’s right, he compares deaf people to cows.

27:12 he starts talking about how he wanted to kill one of the bigfoot children, for no reason, they weren’t injured or anything and were walking around innocently searching for the adult who’d been shot.  At 29:46 he says “fuck it, let’s kill these things.”  At this point, the asshole radar, should such a thing exist, would be off the fricking charts.  At the same time, he seems contrite, and conveys confusion over the whole thing, saying these things aren’t supposed to exist.

35:11 he tells of throwing the bigfoot child corpse at his “buddy.”  I’m not a hunter, in fact I was a vegetarian for a very long time (which I now refer to as my dark years), and maybe throwing corpses is normal for hunters, but isn’t throwing a corpse unseemly and disrespectful?

50:09 I am pretty sure Justin takes a sip of the interviewer’s beer instead of his own.  Gross.  Germs.

54:50 the interviewer expresses that he has a problem with Justin’s description of the bigfoot children and how they looked different from how the adult looked.  This is not a mystery: baby chimps are very different form adult chimps, baby humans are very different from adult humans.

At the end they say they are going to go to Gold Lake in August to visit where the killings happened and make another video.  I SO wanted to see that NOW, I want to see this meadow and that hill he talked about rather than watch them drink beer in a kitchen.  I can watch people drink beer in my own kitchen.

This guy Justin Smeja is a mega hunter and is into taxidermy.  Call me judge-y but that’s weird stuff.  Then again, I used to be a vegetarian.  But throw in his flippant comments about his daughter’s life and comparing deaf people to cows, and I’m like ughhhhhh…. I mean none of that means he’s lying but just ughhhhhhhhhhhhhh….

  • Henry

No, Val, throwing corpses at each other is not the behaviour of a respectful hunter, it is the behaviour of a childish ass. His attitude expressed toward the bodies here also conflicts with his supposed remorse expressed previously about the killing, not to mention the claim they could not manage to lift one of the bodies into the bed of the truck for positive identification. More holes in his story.

Yeah, they did return to the location earlier, but there was supposedly snow covering the the ground and they could not locate any of the bodies.
Why they waited to return is beyond me and only serves to convince me further that there is an intent to hide the truth here.

Smeja reveals himself at every turn to be disingenuous, and that the researchers with him do not ask these questions and seem to consider him only discredits them

  • AaronD2012

    LOL Scott, BUSTED!! haha

  • AaronD2012

I have to agree, if it is true he is an ass. It made me sick just imagining some fat ass idiot throwing a lifeless baby around, regardless what the species. At this point I’m hoping it is all a bunch of crap.

  • Valkyrie13

Thanks Henry, my days of militant and self-righteous vegetarianism still warp my sense of what’s acceptable behavior when it comes to killing animals, glad to know that is indeed not acceptable behavior.

I noticed that here he says a Fish and Game truck pulled around the corner and that’s why they left the corpses, but yeah, earlier he was always saying that the corpses were too heavy.

I think this interviewer isn’t asking the tough questions simply because he’s trying to stay on Smeja’s good side to get as much info as possible.

Whether it really happened or not, Smeja has a massive disrespect for
life and I don’t think it’s too strong to say that I find this guy to be a threat to society.
