The spirit of Kate Koopman, a mother of three who was murdered by her husband on the stairway of their home in November 1922, seems to have never left. Although her husband was charged and convicted for her murder, Peter Koopman never admitted to murdering his wife. Kate Koopman was found by her son at the bottom of the stairs, one day after her murder. According the local historian Wallace Ewing, she was found with a bullet in her back.

The house was built in the late 1800s and has been home to a consignment shop since 1992. Linda Forbes owns the Grand Haven consignment shop which was once the Koopman’s residence. “She seems to like the formals on the balcony,” said Linda Forbes, owner of Second Impression, 310 Fulton Ave. “She’s often dinked around with those.” Forbes also states that she has found the front door open when she knows for certain it was closed and locked, the radio has been turning on and off when no one is around. Clothing is also scattered around and the upstairs bathroom (the home’s original tub) has mysteriously filled with water. “But for the most part, she’s a pretty quiet ghost,” Forbes said. A former employee also claims she has seen Kate’s ghost descending on the stairway.

A local paranormal investigation group called Michigan’s Otherside which is lead by Amberrose Hammond was asked by Forbes to investigate the alleged haunting in 2007.

“We got a really disturbing (audio recording) of the voice of a woman saying, ‘I’m not happy’ three times,” Hammond said. “And at the end she said, ‘Help me.'”
The group investigating the haunting claims they have put the ghost’s recording which they caught EVP or electronic voice phenomena on their website, but I personally was unable to locate it. http://michigansotherside.com/

I guess it wouldn’t be a surprise to haunt the place you were murdered by your own husband, but could it be just someone trying to keep the spirit of Kate around? I personally would love the hear the EVP, so if anyone finds the link please comment back.
